Internet Technologies Compared
Not all internet is created equal. When choosing an internet provider in rural New York, understanding the differences between available technologies helps you make an informed decision. Here's how the major internet technologies compare in terms of speed, reliability, latency, availability, and cost.
Fixed Wireless
High-speed broadband delivered from a local tower to a small antenna on your home. Fixed wireless offers speeds up to 1 Gbps, low latency (5-15ms), and no cables required. It's the ideal solution for rural areas where cable and fiber aren't available. Hudson Valley Wireless uses enterprise-grade equipment and licensed spectrum to deliver consistent, reliable performance year-round.
Cable Internet
Delivered via coaxial cable from a central headend to your home. Cable offers fast speeds in urban and suburban areas but is often unavailable in rural locations. Because bandwidth is shared among neighbors, speeds can drop significantly during peak evening hours when everyone is streaming.
Fiber Optic (XGS-PON)
The fastest available technology with symmetrical upload and download speeds. Fiber offers the lowest latency and highest bandwidth ceiling. However, availability in rural areas is extremely limited due to the high cost of burying or stringing fiber cable to remote locations. Hudson Valley Wireless is deploying XGS-PON fiber in select areas.
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
Uses existing copper telephone lines to deliver internet. While widely available, DSL speeds drop dramatically with distance from the telephone exchange — often delivering under 10 Mbps in rural areas. DSL is being phased out by many carriers as infrastructure ages.
Satellite Internet
Available almost everywhere since it uses orbiting satellites. However, traditional satellite internet suffers from high latency (600+ ms), strict data caps, and weather sensitivity. Newer LEO satellite services offer lower latency but come with higher costs and capacity constraints during peak usage.
