How NITRO Broadband Compares

Several factors should be considered when comparing broadband technologies. It's not all about bandwidth. There are other considerations including latency, packet loss, and jitter that should be calculated to determine the actual "speed" of a connection. Over subscription and Uptime guarantee are also factors for determining a reliable connection. The chart below was created to contrast the available broadband technologies. Compare our plans against Cable, Fiber Optic, DSLand other wireless, Cellular and Satellite plans.

Broadband refers to High-Speed Internet access and advanced telecommunications services In New York State, broadband service is primarily delivered via cable modem, fiber-optic cable, digital subscriber line (DSL), or through mobile wireless (3G/4G/LTE).

In fact, NITRO 2.0 Broadband by Hudson Valley Wireless is the ONLY wireless technology in the Capital Region that meets New York State’s definition speed requirement to be called “Broadband”.

FiOS and Cable

The broadband product delivered by the Fiber Optic and Cable companies is not available to the average consumer in rural areas due to construction costs. The average cost to deploy this type of service in rural areas is $40,000 per mile. Cable is regulated by their franchise agreement and only available to homes with densities between 25-30 homes per mile.
Even if the service passes rural residence there may be a cost to extend the service to the residence.
Example: If the driveway is ¼ mile long, the construction will cost $10,000.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is provided by the Incumbent or Competitive Local Exchange Carrier over conventional telephone lines. In rural areas this technology is deployed over aging copper telephone lines originally installed to provide “Lifeline” telephone service. This program is highly subsidized in the rural areas through government programs and the telephone companies do not want to invest more capital into a legacy infrastructure.
DSL speeds vary based on distance from the Central Office of Fiber Optic SLIC. This service is typically not available to residences that live several miles from the telephone companies Central Office due to load coils, old copper facilities and other limitations.

Satellite Internet service requires the transmission of data to a satellite orbiting the Earth located over 200-miles away. The time it takes to transmit the data is called Latency. High Latency = Slower Speed
The latency on satellite is over 480ms compared to NITRO Broadband around 20ms. That makes NITRO 24x faster than any Satellite service.
These networks are often “oversubscribed” by over allocating network resources. This is a usage based system and the cost per GB is very high.

Cellular 3G / 4G

Most cellular networks deploy a CDMA technology that is optimized for voice calls. Recent upgrades have allowed them to deploy data services over their 3G and 4G platforms.
4G service is not available in all areas. Even if the service is available, many towers in rural areas lack the middle mile transport facilities to support data on the network. In fact, some of the major cellular carrier rely on Hudson Valley Wireless to backhaul their network traffic to rural towers.
These networks have higher latency and are oversubscribed due to the number of voice subscribers. This is a usage based system and the cost per GB is very high.

How Nitro Broadband Works

High Speed Internet Access is delivered by placing an antenna on the home or business. The antenna is aimed towards an Access Point located on an adjacent tower or structure.

The towers are linked together using High Capacity Microwave and Fiber Optics until the traffic reaches the Internet Backbone.

Signal is brought from the antenna into a router where multiple computers or devices have access to the service.

Our advanced network of towers is designed to deliver Broadband Service to Rural Areas.

Fixed Wireless vs Satellite
